THE University of Kent will charge £9,000 a year to study in 2012.
A degree from UKC will be one of the most expensive in the country with any English university being able to charge the maximum due to new government plans.
Kent will follow in the footsteps of Oxford, Cambridge and other universities as they try to make up for the £70m a year cuts made by Government.
Former university lecturer Hannah Smith, from Swale, said: "I understand that universities will have to charge around £6,000 to £8,000, but I feel Kent are charging to High."
"It seems they are trying to stamp a reputation that the university is up there with the likes of Oxford and LSE, with the huge fees."
Ellie Sultana, 17, a student set to start at Kent in 2011, said: "I feel like I've had a lucky escape going to university a year before the rise. I would of definitely of re-thought my decisions on where to study, it's simply too expensive."
A spokesman for the university claimed that the level of fees would allow the university to honour its commitment to deliver high-quality teaching and provide first-rate facilities.
